Wintertime cabin fever? Not at retirement communities!

By: Country Meadows | Uncategorized

Wintertime can be difficult—the cold, snow and ice may cause us to retreat indoors for several months, coming out just for necessary trips to the grocery store and doctor’s office. Seniors, especially, can begin to feel trapped, with little room to roam and not enough to do. Their mental health can suffer, with “cabin fever” ushering in feelings of anxiety, unhappiness, restlessness and boredom.

But not here. Finding retirees with cabin fever at senior living communities is like finding a snowball in a desert. Just look at an activities schedule for a senior retirement home, such as Country Meadows, or visit a campus like ours, and you’ll see why. With spacious areas to socialize and move about indoors and with programs and events galore, retirement community residents are too busy enjoying themselves to feel cooped up or trapped by the weather.

At Country Meadows Retirement Communities, we partner with our residents to help them create lifestyles that are meaningful and vibrant. Offering them a diverse array of retirement community activities, we encourage them to choose where and how much they wish to be involved. And whether they reside here in an independent living community, a personal care home in Pennsylvania or an assisted living facility in Maryland, they can also take part in selecting and planning the activities.

We provide programs that benefit our residents physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. For some seniors, that means adopting a hobby or discovering a skill they never even considered prior to their move here. We also involve residents in our Connections memory support program in these activities as much as possible.

Here is a sampling of indoor activities our senior living communities offer that nourish body, mind and soul:

  • Sports and fitness – various exercise classes focusing on balance, strength or flexibility; organized walking; tai chi; Wii bowling; kickball
  • Spiritual life – devotions; Bible study; theological discussions; pastoral counseling; religious services
  • Arts and music – art classes; sing-alongs; piano; knitting; various art and craft projects
  • Horticulture – plant care; indoor gardening
  • Games – word games; bingo; trivia; brain challenges; board games; cards; puzzles
  • Volunteerism – on-campus and community outreach, including Meals on Wheels; soup kitchens; community fundraisers; packing supplies for military personnel; knitting and crocheting items for cancer patients; baking dog biscuits for animal shelters
  • And more – including bus trips for shopping and dining out; baking and cooking; movies; pet-focused activities

Every day, we offer a variety of indoor activities to accommodate the desires of every personality, and we are always open to initiating new programs to meet our residents’ wants and needs.

If you’re considering an active retirement in senior independent living, personal care or assisted living at a Pennsylvania or Maryland retirement home, we invite you to visit one or more of our senior living homes, where you will find residents with full lives in a family-oriented, caring environment. Please contact us for information or to schedule a tour so that we can acquaint you with our complete range of services.
