Skilled Nursing Facility Services

By: Country Meadows | Senior Living

If your loved one needs specialized medical care for a chronic condition or assistance for the short-term following surgery or other significant medical emergency, a skilled nursing facility can provide what you need. Choosing a skilled nursing facility can be a daunting task. Thankfully there is guidance available to help in choosing the right skilled nursing facility.

Services provided at a skilled nursing facility

A skilled nursing facility provides round-the-clock care for people who need supervision and specialized medical care to manage complex medical needs such as wound care, IV medications, pressure ulcers and speech and occupational therapies. Residents in skilled nursing receive assistance with everyday tasks such as bathing, showering, managing medications and eating.

A skilled nursing facility also provides short-term stays for individuals following a hospitalization, surgery, injury or decline in health. Residents receive rehabilitative services to prepare them to return to their former lifestyle, whether returning to a private home, personal care home or other accommodation.

Lifestyle at a skilled nursing facility

In most skilled nursing facilities, residents can elect to share a semi-private room or have a fully private room. Meals are served in dining rooms or, if the resident is unable or prefers not to leave the room, served bedside.

To provide opportunities residents to enjoy life, skilled nursing facilities offer several activities and games as well as entertainment.

Payment options for skilled nursing

Skilled nursing services provide medically necessary care supervised by a physician, therefore the cost is covered by Medicare and Medicaid, Veterans benefits as well as most long-term care insurance policies in certified facilities.

Differences between a skilled nursing facility and personal care home or assisted living facility

Both skilled nursing and assisted living/personal care communities are both long-term care options that provide a range of supporting medical, personal and social services for people wh can no longer complete tasks such as bathing, dressing or eating.

Residents in assisted living communities live as independently as possible in a home-like apartment setting, but receive assistance with daily tasks. Residents are not monitored on a regular basis, however trained staff are available to help as needed.

In a skilled nursing facility, medical care is provided for residents with chronic or complex medical needs or individuals recovering from an injury or surgery. While attempts are made to make a skilled nursing facility as home-like as possible, rooms tend to be more clinical in nature.

Certified skilled nursing facilities have nurses on duty 24 hours a day and care is delivered by certified nursing assistants.

Celebrating skilled nursing

Skilled nursing facility staff provide a high level of support delivered with compassionate care. This has never been more evident that the last two years during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to protecting and caring for residents, skilled nursing facility staff become surrogate family members and friends to maintain important social connections.

This year’s theme is “Creating and Nurturing Connections.” Taking time to listen to how residents’ lives most significant events, relationships and experiences have shaped who others are today cultivates a shared sense of purpose and deeper understanding for both residents and the co-workers.
