With temperatures rising and hurricanes growing stronger and more frequent, many retirees are foregoing retiring in Florida for Mid-Atlantic communities with small town charm and big city access. In our first in a series of blogs highlighting senior friendly communities, we’re exploring what makes retirement living in Mechanicsburg, Pa. so special.

Location, location, location

Mechanicsburg is a historic borough in the Pennsylvania capitol metro area, which has been topping best places lists recently. U.S. News & World Report called Harrisburg the best place to retire in the country in 2024-2025. It has also been listed as the top place to live in Pennsylvania and 38th in the entire nation.

Pennsylvania itself is a mecca for older adults with more than 2.5 million residents aged 65 or older, according to statistics from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.

For many, Mechanicsburg offers the best of both worlds – a neighborhood feel close to capital city amenities. Well-located on the West Shore with access to major highways, the borough is only eight miles from Harrisburg and within a couple hours drive to Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York City and Washington, D.C.

The area boasts some of the highest-rated medical facilities in the country, too, including Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and UPMC Harrisburg.

Area attractions

There is so much to do here. With museums like the Rolls Royce Foundation & Museum and the Oakes Museum of Natural History, farm markets, parks, boutique shops, theatre and dirt track racing, there is something for everyone. Festivals, like Jubilee Day, the largest, longest-running one-day street fair on the East Coast, draw thousands of people to Mechanicsburg.
