Personal care and assisted living homes provide seniors privacy and dignity

By: Country Meadows | Uncategorized

Retirees who move to senior communities generally opt for an independent living lifestyle if they can, with peace of mind knowing they can transition to an increased level of care if their daily needs change.

Personal care and assisted living homes offer most of the same amenities as independent living communities, but with the addition of assistance with daily needs from professionally trained staff. At Country Meadows Retirement Communities, personal care and assisted living residents still have access to transportation, daily meals, laundry and housekeeping services, and 24-hour access to staff support.

Sometimes older persons express concern that in making such a change, they may have to sacrifice the personal privacy they have had throughout their adult lives. They can be rest assured, however, that their privacy and dignity, as well as health and safety, are the priorities of staff who assist them.

Privacy in living accommodations and daily care

The daughter of a resident in our Frederick, Maryland, retirement home commented on how her father, depending on his current needs, could choose community or privacy. “Dad could socialize with other people in the common areas—like the dining room, theater or porch—or he could close the door to his bedroom for complete privacy.”

Residents and family members are pleased to not only find privacy in senior living accommodations but also in health care, in daily personal care and during family visits.

Personal care and assisted living services provide personalized assistance to residents who may remain active but need help with daily living activities like dressing, hair care and taking medications. In addition, assistance with personal hygiene includes activities like hand washing, bathing, skin and nail care, shaving and dental care.

To guarantee privacy and dignity to seniors at Country Meadows Retirement Communities, we hire compassionate individuals who enjoy working with older persons and are trained to help them with personal care needs. Our staff approaches care with an understanding that seniors wish to remain as independent as possible in caring for their own needs. Our coworkers respect each one of our seniors, using sensitivity, gentleness and patience in all interactions and communications just like they would expect to be treated themselves.

For example, our staff knows to ask residents their preferences in regard to decisions such as when to wake up and what to wear. During moments of intimate care, our staff is trained in how to assist and talk with residents comfortably to avoid embarrassment and preserve dignity.

And when caring for residents in need of memory support, our staff members are aware of how to communicate with them and convey what they are doing together at all times.

A family member of a Country Meadows resident says, “I have worked in assisted living and nursing homes for 18 years, and Country Meadows is absolutely the best at treating residents with kindness, dignity and respect.”
