She certainly isn’t alone. As we mature, we seem more eager to welcome the return of chirping birds and colorful blooms following a long, cold winter. If she were to move to a senior living community, she would discover lots to do and plenty of company outdoors among her newfound friends.
With the mid-Atlantic spring bringing warmer sunshine tempered with cool breezes, residents of senior living homes, like Country Meadows Retirement Communities, take part in various outdoor activities. At our Pennsylvania and Maryland retirement homes, our residents find that being out amid freshly sprung flowers and blossoming trees is energizing and rejuvenating.
Outdoor activities are popular with seniors
The most popular outdoor retirement community activity is simply walking among the safe and scenic walks and roadways of Country Meadows campuses. Either in small groups or alone, seniors relish the physically and mentally therapeutic benefits of leisurely walks amid nature. And for seniors in independent senior living who are able to “pick up and go,” nearby nature trails may be available for a pleasant hike and possibly bird watching as well.
Many of our seniors who were avid gardeners prior to their move to Country Meadows enjoy finding space available to maintain a small garden on campus. Nothing offers back-to-nature peace of mind more than getting hands dirty to grow vegetables for one’s own use or to share with friends.
Outdoor sporting activities that are popular during senior living are horseshoes and golfing, both providing exercise, camaraderie and friendly competition. All of our homes are in close proximity to golf courses. In addition, several residents have also discovered nearby streams and lakes for fishing.
Some seniors in independent living still like bicycling, which can be a good, low-impact, aerobic exercise alternative for residents in good health and fitness. However, we suggest that would-be cyclists at retirement homes get an OK from their physician first saying they have the mobility, stamina and balance required for bike riding.
Country Meadows offers outdoor comfort and entertainment
For those who prefer the relaxation of sitting—while chatting with friends, reading or just soaking in sunshine—Country Meadows has ample seating for rest and reflection throughout each campus.
Our communities also host various outdoor events throughout the year—concerts, picnics and fairs—which are enjoyed by residents and their families. And offsite, seniors can take in area musical performances and sporting events, as well as scenic local parks and gardens.
