Love to volunteer? Your retirement community can find a place for you

By: Country Meadows | Uncategorized

People enjoy sharing their time and talent with organizations that provide services to benefit the community. We all like to make a difference. But while volunteers are giving, they’re receiving as well, and that’s evident in the large number of people who give of themselves at senior living communities.

The health benefits of volunteering
The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) lists pride, satisfaction and accomplishment as reasons that people volunteer. In addition, over the past two decades, research has indicated that providing service has health benefits. CNCS’s report, “The Health Benefits of Volunteering,” states that, overall, giving people have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and lower rates of depression than those who are not.

People who derive the greatest health benefits from volunteering, according to recent findings, are those whose service hours exceed 100 in a year’s time—at least two hours per week.

In the “Older Americans” segment of its report, CNCS says that volunteering provides seniors with physical and social outlets associated with better physical health. These adults also report greater satisfaction with senior citizen living. Regarding mental health, CNCS reports that “volunteer activities can strengthen the social ties that protect individuals from isolation during difficult times, while the experience of helping others leads to a sense of greater self-worth and trust.”

Opportunities at Country Meadows
Volunteerism at Country Meadows is a significant part of our retirement community activities. This is true for residents in all of our senior communities, regardless of their lifestyle options—in our personal care homes and assisted living facility, as well as senior independent living communities.

Our Country Meadows volunteers help elementary students learn to read, prepare meals for local soup kitchens, pack supplies for military personnel overseas, knit and crochet hats and lap robes for cancer patients, bake dog biscuits for animal shelters and raise funds for charitable organizations. And that’s just a fraction of what our volunteers do!

Strong and consistent volunteer programming at all of our retirement homes lets our residents connect with their local communities and gives them a sense of purpose and pride. It also encourages them to remain active and social by spending time with others who share their interests.

If you enjoy sharing your time and talent, and are in the process of choosing a retirement community, be sure to inquire about volunteer opportunities at your prospective homes. Of course, we would be delighted to show you any of our PA retirement communities or our Frederick, Maryland location. Please contact us for information or to schedule a visit.
