Sensory Connections

When residents, especially those in the later stages of dementia, are losing their connection to the world around them, there is an increased need for sensory input. In our Connections Memory Support Services Neighborhood, we find ways to help residents engage in activities related to their five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. This not only promotes more meaningful interactions with individuals in their life, it also allows residents to express themselves, tap into pleasant memories or emotions and increase their communication and alertness. Sensory Connections activities are simple in nature to avoid overstimulation. As a result, residents have decreased anxiety, restlessness and other behaviors when they are grounding themselves in Sensory Connections activities.
