A Lifetime of Love

Love, companionship and commitment. Our residents’ and co-workers’ love stories warm our hearts and inspire our own journeys. Enjoy reading how they met, their lasting bonds and advice for couples.

She had a smile and quite a line, this country boy thought it was fine;
Away at school, his heart would pine, to hug and kiss would be divine.

But after all this single bliss, which I confess, I really miss;
I didn’t know it would be like this, with those few words, sealed with a kiss.

~ Excerpts from a love poem the late Governor Leader wrote for his beloved wife of 72 years, Mary Jane
(Country Meadows’ founders)

Hal and Pat

In the vibrant halls of Manchester High School, amidst the roar of basketball games, Hal and Pat’s love story unfolded. United by their love for sports, they quickly became inseparable (Hal even joined Pat’s family bakery soon after they began dating). Their bond deepened over the years, weathering life’s highs and lows with unwavering devotion. When asked if they ever thought they would be married for 70+ years, they simply nodded in unison, affirming, “Oh yes!” Their lasting love symbolizes the power of true love with their hearts forever entwined in a journey that spans a lifetime.

They both had a challenging home life growing up, maturing them beyond their years. Meeting at 20 with prior marriages and parenthood behind them, they found strength in their shared journey. Gary’s adoption of Bev’s son underscored their commitment to creating a stable, loving family—a dream they longed for. Now, as they approach their 64th anniversary, their legacy of resilience and devotion lives on in their children and grandchildren, a testament to the enduring power of love.

While only acquaintances at the time, this simple act of kindness revealed an immediate connection as they discovered meaningful commonalities during their outing. From that moment on, they “just clicked,” enjoying live music events, social gatherings and occasional movie nights together. Beyond their own companionship, Don’s willingness to assist Marie underscores their mutual support and care, setting a heartwarming example for their neighbors at Country Meadows.

Brooke and Matt Meszaros

Matt and Brooke

#FromAlleyToAisle is the hashtag Brooke, Dining Services Manager at our York-West campus, uses to describe her love story. When looking for a substitute for her bowling team one night, a teammate suggested her cousin, Matt. And as Brooke describes it, when he walked up, she had “hearts in my eyes.” He soon became an official team mate and six months later, her soul mate. At their two-year anniversary in 2021, Matt proposed in front of the Bellagio Fountains in Las Vegas when they were in town for their first National Bowling Tournament together, and a year later, they were married. Their reception was adorned with hints of bowling themes: guests signed two bowling pins from the bowling alley where they met and a cake topper with a bride and groom holding bowling balls. Their union is a perfect “strike.”
