Planning

We have put together resources to help you think through what you or your loved ones will need as they age. How do you prepare for a new chapter in your life? When is it time to make a move? We want to help you put together a plan and make the right choices for you.

What to look for when considering a home-care company

Selecting a home-care company is only part of the decision. The first step typically is determining what assistance your loved one may need, followed by how to introduce this solution to your family. A good home-care company can assist with both. To help you find the right provider for your family’s needs, here are some questions to consider:

Meeting Your Needs

  • Does the provider offer the assistance you are looking for?
  • Can the company provide other in-home services should your loved one need more care in the future, including memory support?
  • What if it is no longer safe for your loved one to live at home or becomes too much for you as the full-time caregiver—does the provider have a full continuum of care to make a seamless transition?
  • Does the home-care company have resources to support your family in the caregiver journey such as educational topics or memory support groups?
  • Can the caregiver bring your loved one to one of the company’s senior communities for more social engagement, fitness activities and peer connections?

Evaluating Competence

  • Does the company have a good reputation? Ask your physician(s) and friends, even neighbors or fellow parishioners—you’ll soon realize you are not alone in exploring this type of care.
  • Was the provider responsive in your initial contact?
  • Is there an in-home assessment for you to review your questions and get a feel for the company, as well as for the company to meet your loved one and then recommend the appropriate services and pair compatible caregivers?
  • Are the company caregivers trained in actual, on-the-job situations beyond simple textbook or computer training? And do they receive ongoing training to ensure continued competency?

Receiving Support

  • Will the company advise you on how to approach this solution with your family and loved one?
  • Can your representative be a part of that conversation if you desired?
  • Is the company readily accessible should you have a question or concern any day of the week, even after hours and on holidays?
  • Does the provider seem genuinely interested in helping you find the right care whether through their own services or a recommended referral in their network?

While these are suggested guidelines, ask as many questions as you feel are necessary and important to you. Personal home-care assistance is personal. It’s your loved one. Your family. And your family’s decision. Above all trust your intuition. You should feel comfortable bringing this company into your or your loved one’s home just as you would with any friend or welcomed guest.
