Getting the most for your money is always important. But price is only part of it. There are a lot of different ways to get the best value in a retirement community.
Tip #1: Consider all-rental
Many retirement communities charge five- and six-figure entrance fees to buy in, which may not be refundable. All-rental communities charge only a monthly fee for an apartment and personalized services based on care needs, if needed, plus a one-time nominal community fee toward the common areas.
Tip #2: Safety first
There is no price for peace of mind knowing you or your loved one has 24/7 access to resources and trained staff to be safe and comfortable. Ask about fall prevention programs, apartment accommodations, fire safety and emergency preparedness plans, staff training and around-the-clock availability of on-campus nurses.
Tip #3: Try the food!
Nothing beats delicious meals served to your liking. Ask to see a menu and sample some of the options. Be sure you see choices and alternatives that meet your preference and palate to help envision living there.
Tip #4: Ask about pets
If you are a proud pet parent, it’s important to know not all communities welcome furry friends. For those that do, ask about their policy, any security deposits and if they offer services should you or your one need assistance in caring for the pet.
Tip #5: Ask to see the activities calendar
Take a look at the activities scheduled throughout the week. Do they look like fun or the kinds of things you would like to do? Look for a wide variety of choices on and off campus like art classes, gardening, fitness, social clubs, volunteering, educational programs, outings, even Happy Hour!
Tip #6: Explore socialization opportunities
One of the best values in a retirement community should be, well, the community and the opportunity to socialize with peers who share similar interests. Ask how the community encourages and coordinates socialization. New friends and neighbors can be the best part of living there!
Tip #7: Don’t forget the intangibles
Cost is important, but there is value in attributes like the positive attitude and friendliness of the staff, happiness and engagement of the residents, a clean and home-like setting, well-maintained common areas and grounds and an all-round welcomeness you may feel.
