Help is here.

It may be time to consider talking with your siblings or parents about the amount of stress you are enduring. This can be a difficult conversation, but here are some ways to make it easier:

  • Acknowledge your feelings—even the negative ones (anger, frustration, impatience, resentment, guilt). Then forgive yourself and let yourself grieve the change aging brings and how it affects everyone. Process this new dynamic and find new ways to connect with your loved one.
  • Intentionally schedule time for daily self-care, including eating healthy foods, keeping a gratitude journal, meditating or exercising. Even if it is only for 15 minutes!
  • Get creative with planning a fair division of labor with siblings or others. If they don’t offer to help, ask. If there is someone that lives far away, could they help by doing something by phone or email, or help with expenses?

If you would like more tips like these, we offer a free 20-page guide, “Finding Your Way to Caring for a Loved One and You” which can help with a discussion about caregiving or other topics related to aging. There is no magic way to make discussions like these easy, but our tips may make a difference and help get conversations started.
