Laughter—a Common Sight and Sound When Living in a Retirement Community

Does a laugh a day keep the doctor away?

While we can’t promise that, we can confidently say that laughter is definitely good for the body, mind and spirit. That’s why it’s often referred to as “the best medicine” for every age, including seniors living in a retirement community.

“I love people who make me laugh,” said actress Audrey Hepburn. “I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills.”

She was right, according to renowned laughter expert Sebastian Gendry. The CEO of Laughter Online University cites several potential health benefits of laughter, including:

  • Increased supply of oxygen
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Alleviation of pain and improved mobility
  • Improved memory, thinking and intellect
  • Reduced stress and positive attitude
  • Better communication and reduced confrontation
  • Greater feeling of closeness and friendship

Overall, studies have shown that people tend to live longer if they laugh more, have a greater sense of humor and exhibit a positive attitude. They also are likely to use their positive energy to do good works to help people in need. That’s how Hilarity for Charity was born—it’s an effort by professional funny people to use laughter for raising funds and awareness to fight Alzheimer’s disease.

Fun and fellowship when living in a retirement community

At Country Meadows, we believe the best retirement communities not only encourage laughter but create it as well. We know its healing power can lift a sagging spirit and brighten a cloudy day. The sight and sound of laughter should be part of every life, regardless of age.

We do our best to ensure that laughter-inducing entertainment is part of life at Country Meadows, from our social events to our recreational programs and even fitness activities. If you stop by our game rooms or visit our daily happy hours, you will see friends, neighbors and co-workers good-naturedly joining in fun and fellowship.

Another source of joy at Country Meadows is our furry, four-legged friends. Some live here with their owners, while others visit regularly as therapy animals. We value their natural ability to elicit smiles and laughs from our residents.

Our many opportunities to socialize and laugh help Country Meadows residents maintain their physical, mental and spiritual health. We invite you to read our tip sheet listing the social benefits of living in a retirement community. Our activities are open to everyone who wants to participate, and we urge residents to join in the fun.

If you or a loved one is thinking of living in a retirement community, we hope you will contact us to learn more about our active senior living communities. We invite you to visit as well, so we can tell you in greater detail about our broad range of services.
